The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) is one of the earliest of Europe's parties to embrace anti-immigrant populism. It is led by Herbert Kickl. In the September 2024 election the FPÖ came first with 29% of the vote, ahead of the ÖVP's 26% and the SPÖ's 21%. Despite winning the most seats, coalition talks with the ÖVP collapsed and the party went into opposition.
The FPÖ has embraced the far-right concept of "remigration" with gusto, following the AfD in Germany.
It is the fate of all banisters worth sliding down that there is something nasty waiting at the far end.
