Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, is a singer-turned-politician and the most popular opposition candidate in Uganda. He campaigns in a bulletproof vest; his supporters are routinely bludgeoned and tear-gassed. He belongs to the Baganda ethnic group. His party is the National Unity Platform; David Lewis Rubongoya is its secretary-general.
Wine ran against Yoweri Museveni in the January 2026 presidential election. After the vote he went into hiding. He called the results a "complete falsehood". Three of his party's deputy presidents have been detained. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the army chief and president's son, threatened to kill Wine on social media.
