Darren Jones was appointed by Keir Starmer to the new post of "chief secretary to the prime minister", tasked with enforcing the prime minister's priorities in Whitehall. The role reflects Sir Keir's frustration that pulling the levers of government produces too little action, hindered by regulations, consultations and arm's-length bodies.
Its failings notwithstanding, there is much to be said in favor of journalism in that by giving us the opinion of the uneducated, it keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community.
