Faure Gnassingbe has ruled Togo for 20 years, succeeding his father Gnassingbe Eyadema, who was in power for nearly 38 years. He evaded term limits by amending the constitution. In 2025 he stood down as president but had himself appointed by parliament as the head of a new body, allowing him to pay lip service to relinquishing power while retaining control.
