Successor to Warren Buffett as chief executive of Berkshire Hathaway, taking the role at the end of 2025. Mr Abel came up through the energy business and has run Berkshire's non-insurance activities—energy, railway and retail businesses—since 2018. He is not a stock-picker. His areas of expertise include utilities and Japanese trading houses. He is expected to bring more typical corporate governance to Berkshire, including greater financial disclosure. The firm recently appointed its first general counsel under his watch.
