American businessman and private astronaut who was confirmed as the administrator of NASA in late 2025. His nomination by Donald Trump was initially withdrawn, with no reason given beyond vague allusions to "prior associations", before being re-submitted and confirmed.
Since taking over NASA, Mr Isaacman has overhauled the agency's long-range plans for the Artemis programme. He announced a permanent Moon base, the phasing out of the SLS rocket after Artemis V, the indefinite pause of the Lunar Gateway, and a new nuclear-powered mission to Mars (SR-1 Freedom). He has encouraged competition between private companies and stressed that the changes would deliver better value for money.
