Jeff Landry is the Republican governor of Louisiana. In December 2025 Donald Trump appointed him special envoy to Greenland, a foreign-policy novice in a role that implied the United States intended to treat Greenland as a separate entity from Denmark.
In a January 2026 op-ed, Mr Landry insisted that the framework agreement being discussed with Danish and Greenlandic officials "will lead to the United States' gaining total, unfettered access to the island"—far short of Mr Trump's public demand for acquisition.
