Jim Chanos is perhaps Wall Street's most experienced short-seller. He is best known for having predicted the downfall of Enron, a fraudulent energy-trading giant that collapsed in 2001. His firm was once the world's biggest short-selling specialist but closed to external investors in 2023 after client withdrawals. It now operates as a family office.
Mr Chanos believes the fraud cycle follows the financial cycle: the longer a boom goes on, the more egregious the fraud it conceals. He notes that retail traders are even more exposed to the stockmarket than they were in the dotcom era.
Once it hits the fan, the only rational choice is to sweep it up, package it, and sell it as fertilizer.
