President of Timor-Leste. He won the Nobel peace prize while in exile during Indonesian rule. He described ASEAN membership, achieved after 14 years of deliberation, as "the achievement of a lifelong goal". Getting into ASEAN, he said, "is as hard as getting into heaven."
