Kizza Besigye is a Ugandan opposition leader and four-time presidential candidate who has challenged Yoweri Museveni at the ballot box since 2001. Since 2011 he has been trying to provoke an Arab spring-style uprising.
In late 2024 Mr Besigye was kidnapped while visiting Kenya and unlawfully rendered to a military jail in Uganda, where he stands accused of plotting to overthrow the government. The rendition required "a high level of co-ordination" between the two countries' security agencies, according to Amnesty International. Kenya admitted it co-operated, saying his treatment may have been "different" had he claimed asylum. He was locked up ahead of the 2026 election; his wife says he is seriously ill and being denied adequate care.
Don't tell any big lies today. Small ones can be just as effective.
