Laurent Gbagbo is a former president of Ivory Coast. He refused to accept defeat in the 2010 presidential election, sparking a brief civil war in which some 3,000 people died. That election eventually brought Alassane Ouattara to power. Gbagbo was barred from the 2025 presidential election on the basis of his criminal conviction for his conduct during the civil war. His party joined forces with Tidjane Thiam's party to push for reinstatement and electoral reform.
