Luis Arce is the president of Bolivia. He served as Evo Morales's finance minister before winning the 2020 presidential election as the MAS candidate chosen by Mr Morales. Once in office, he sought to hold on to power rather than make way for Mr Morales's return, triggering a bitter split within the Movement to Socialism (MAS). His government has pursued charges against Mr Morales, including ordering his arrest on allegations of statutory rape. A foreign-exchange crisis has pushed Mr Arce closer to Bolivia's mining co-operatives, which produce most of the country's gold.
The economic crisis—with fuel shortages and inflation likely to hit 30% in 2025—ruined Mr Arce's electoral chances. Polls showed that just 2% of voters intended to vote for him. He withdrew from the August 2025 presidential election.
