President of Cuba since 2018, when he succeeded Raúl Castro. At his inauguration he publicly vowed to defer to Raúl on all major decisions. His second five-year term ends in April 2028. He is 65, widely considered a dull figurehead, and openly derided as a "singao"—a Cuban insult. He was installed by the regime precisely because he would not make drastic changes. Cuba's chronic inability to repay its debts has undermined his attempts to attract foreign investment. He holds little real clout; some believe he may be ousted to satisfy Donald Trump and protect the Castro family, particularly as a deal modelled on the Venezuelan arrangement appeared to take shape in early 2026.
