India's commerce minister. On April 7th 2025 Goyal said India would not, for the moment, approve an application by BYD, a Chinese EV-maker, to invest $1bn in an Indian joint venture. "Not too much Chinese investment has come to India. Nor are we encouraging any significant investment coming in from China at all," he told a conference on April 11th 2025.
In February 2026, two days after a trade deal with America was announced, Mr Goyal said agriculture and dairy had been "completely protected" under the agreement. On March 27th 2026 he met Wang Wentao, China's commerce minister, to discuss trade—part of a wary rapprochement between the two countries. He raised the issue of access to the Chinese market for Indian pharmaceuticals and of a trade deficit exceeding $100bn annually.
