Leader of the Democratic Party for the People (DPFP), the most successful small party in Japan. The DPFP combines technocratic centrism with populist flair and appeals to voters from both sides of the political spectrum. The party quadrupled its seats in the Lower House in October 2024, to 28. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party, which has 196 seats, has been forced to co-operate with it to pass many bills.
At the upper-house election on July 20th 2025, the DPFP more than doubled its seats, from nine to 22, making it the second-largest opposition party in the upper house after the Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP).
After Komeito split from the LDP on October 10th 2025, Takaichi Sanae courted Tamaki behind Komeito's back. Noda Yoshihiko, the leader of the centre-left CDP, signalled a willingness to back Tamaki as prime minister at the head of an opposition coalition. A meeting of the three opposition party leaders on October 15th ended without agreement.
Tamaki hopes his party will one day prop up a coalition government; he wants to use that leverage to become prime minister. He is laser-focused on winning over younger and working-age Japanese, offering big tax cuts and using the slogan "anxious to hopeful generation". The DPFP leads the LDP among under-40 voters. The party boasts nearly twice as many YouTube subscribers as the LDP. Despite its small size, the DPFP has pushed through tax policy in the Diet.
