Tim Walz is the governor of Minnesota. He dropped his re-election bid in early 2026, seemingly as a result of a sprawling fraud scandal in which the state had failed to make rudimentary checks on the recipients of government money. The Donald Trump administration attempted to link the scandal to immigration, as many of the accused are of Somali ethnicity, but the federal crackdown in Minneapolis—Operation Metro Surge, led by ICE—drew attention away from the fraud allegations.
The Department of Justice issued subpoenas to Mr Walz and five other Democratic officials in the state as part of an investigation into whether they had improperly interfered with ICE.
