President of Guinea-Bissau from 2020 until his arrest in a military coup on November 26th 2025. He came to power in 2020 following a disputed election, after which the army occupied state offices before his inauguration. He dissolved parliament following an alleged coup attempt in 2023 and ruled without a legislature thereafter. The cocaine trade flourished under his tenure.
He fancied himself as Donald Trump's Africa whisperer and lobbied to arrange the meeting of five west African leaders at the White House on July 9th 2025. He made around 300 foreign visits since taking power, many of them, according to one African leader, without being invited.
