Nicotine

A stimulant compound naturally found in tobacco. By some reckonings it is as addictive as cocaine, yet it has never been found to cause cancer or other smokers' diseases such as emphysema.

Cognitive effects

Nicotine prods neurons to release neurotransmitters including dopamine, glutamate, noradrenaline and serotonin, which promote alertness, learning, memory and motor control. Brain-scan studies show that it increases blood flow to the prefrontal cortex and thalamus.

In 2010 researchers at America's National Institutes of Health pooled the results of 41 trials on nicotine's cognitive effects and found "significant positive effects" on attention and memory. A review published in 2023 found that nicotine improved both short- and long-term memory in people with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. A study published in Nature Medicine in 2017 described how nicotine reversed mental deficits in mice with a gene variant linked with schizophrenia in humans.

Risks

Nicotine's stimulation of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens activates the brain's reward network, creating a pleasurable sensation that, when it fades, produces an urge to take nicotine again—the basis of its addictiveness. Animal studies suggest that exposure during adolescence or in the womb may rewire the brain unfavourably: adolescent rats exposed to nicotine later showed greater impulsivity, inattention, anxiety and depression-like behaviours.

Vaping market

Nicotine vapes and oral pouches have soared in popularity. The global vaping market was worth $22.5bn in 2022.
