Alloyed

A British advanced-manufacturing startup founded in 2017 by materials engineers from the University of Oxford. Alloyed designs entirely new metal alloys to make lighter, stronger fiddly parts for everything from military kit to consumer electronics, and then prints them layer by layer from powdered metal on industrial 3D-printing machines. Its chief executive is Michael Holmes, who reckons the firm will not become profitable until 2028. About 90% of the company's employees have a technical background, though to maintain a startup vibe few have more than three years of experience.

Its subsidiary Argive makes micro turbines about the size of a coffee tin, intended for a new generation of long-range drones. Argive is the fastest-growing part of the business, with customers including Boeing and consumer-electronics companies making lightweight augmented-reality glasses.

The firm hopes to evolve a business model resembling Arm's: building a library of "recipe books" with alloy designs that manufacturers abroad can print themselves, starting with turbines sent as digital files rather than crates to allies such as France, Germany and Poland.

Sic transit gloria Monday!
