Fox Corporation

American media company controlled by the Murdoch family. Lachlan Murdoch is chief executive.

Fox's business is concentrated in American broadcast and cable television. In 2019 Rupert Murdoch sold Fox's general-entertainment assets to Disney for $71bn, at what turned out to be the top of the market, choosing to focus on news and sport—content that streamers have been slower to capture.

Despite a shrinking cable market, Fox's affiliate fees (the sums it charges cable providers for carrying its channels) have grown modestly, from $5.9bn in 2020 to $7.3bn in 2024.

Streaming

In 2020 Fox bought Tubi, a free, advertising-supported streaming service. Tubi has since overtaken rivals such as Pluto (owned by Paramount) and is on track to bring in more than $1bn in 2025. In February 2025 Fox aired the Super Bowl on Tubi, drawing 8m new viewers to the platform; some 40% of the audience was under 34. In August 2025 Fox launched Fox One, a paid streaming service. Sport is at Fox One's core, but about a third of time spent on the app is on news; viewers who watch news use the platform three times as much as those who don't. Fox holds the rights to the 2026 football World Cup, held mainly in America.

Cable audience and digital strategy

Fox Corporation made 92% of its revenue last year from linear TV, according to Bernstein, a broker. Fox News is the most-watched cable news network, so popular that it is also the most-watched cable news channel among Democrats. Its median cable viewer is pushing 70, as its ads for pension annuities and erectile-dysfunction pills suggest. The share of American homes with cable has fallen below half for the first time since the 1980s.

To lure younger viewers, Fox has promoted young presenters including Trey Yingst (32, chief foreign correspondent, 1m TikTok followers), Peter Doocy, Lawrence Jones and Gen Z presenter Brett Cooper. Nearly half of Fox News's viewers on TikTok are aged 18-34. Fox has struck a licensing deal with "Ruthless", a conservative podcast, and is said to be negotiating a partnership with Kalshi, a prediction market, to provide betting odds for news events.

Succession

On September 8th 2025 the Murdoch family announced a resolution to the decades-long succession dispute. Under the deal, Lachlan Murdoch's three siblings—Prudence, Elisabeth and James—reportedly gave up their votes in exchange for about $1bn each. The agreement gives Lachlan a controlling stake until 2050. The settling of the family feud could open the door to more expansive moves, including a possible recombination of Fox and News Corp (Rupert attempted this in 2022 but was opposed by James and other shareholders). Hollywood consolidation is another possibility: John Malone of Warner Bros Discovery discussed a merger of Fox and Warner with Rupert Murdoch in 2024.

2020 election coverage settlement

Fox Corporation paid $787m to settle a case about its coverage of the 2020 presidential election. Investors have charged that Rupert Murdoch should personally cover the payment, in a suit similar to the one Paramount shareholders have brought against Shari Redstone.
