Nation Media Group is one of Africa's largest media empires, based in Kenya. It was founded in 1959 and owns dozens of newspapers, TV stations and radio outlets across east Africa. The group's flagship title is the Nation, a Kenyan daily known for its relatively independent journalism.
The group's former owner was the Aga Khan, the late leader of Ismaili Muslims, who was renowned for keeping politicians "off his back". On March 10th 2026 Rostam Azizi, a Tanzanian industrialist and former ruling-party MP, bought a controlling stake. Azizi describes himself as a "great believer in print media" and promises to safeguard editorial independence while investing millions of dollars to transform the company.
The group reported pre-tax losses and declining revenue in 2023 and 2024. Young Kenyans increasingly get their news from social networks such as YouTube and TikTok.
The Nation has been sharply critical of William Ruto, Kenya's president; one front page pronounced his government a "Rogue Regime". Since Ruto took office in 2022 the government has pushed back against investigations into corruption, with frequent requests from State House to take stories down. In Uganda, Nation reporters were barred from covering President Yoweri Museveni's events during his re-election campaign in 2025.
An evil mind is a great comfort.
