Rostam Azizi is a Tanzanian industrialist, former ruling-party MP and one of Africa's richest men. He runs Taifa Group.
On March 10th 2026 Azizi bought a controlling stake in Nation Media Group, one of Africa's largest media empires, based in Kenya. He describes himself as a "great believer in print media" and says he will invest millions of dollars in the group while safeguarding its editorial independence. The Committee to Protect Journalists has recommended he introduce binding editorial charters to allay concerns that his other business interests in east Africa may depend on warm relations with increasingly autocratic governments.
In August 2026 Africa's largest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) terminal, which Azizi is building, is expected to begin operations in Kenya after years of delay. Taifa Group also plans to invest $500m in Zambian industry over two years, starting with the supply and distribution of LPG. "We've got the gas and they need gas," he says. "Soon they won't need to worry about supply from anywhere else."
In seeking the unattainable, simplicity only gets in the way.
