The Arakan Army (AA) is an ethnic militia representing the Buddhist majority in Rakhine state, Myanmar. It is one of several armed groups battling the Myanmar junta in the country's civil war. The AA now controls most of Rakhine state.
The AA is accused of launching attacks on the Rohingyas, a Muslim minority in Rakhine. The UN says the group has committed "numerous abuses and violations", including a massacre that killed hundreds in a village in 2024. The AA denies that it targets Rohingyas, saying it targets only armed militants. Armed Rohingya groups operating from refugee camps in Bangladesh have launched raids back across the border into Myanmar to attack the AA.
China, which has investments in Rakhine and close ties to the AA, could pressure the group to improve conditions there.
