Word Color

Calculate the color associated with an image by averaging the images when searching for this word. The ocean is blue, mars is red.

Word color is the fourth iteration of this idea. The first iteration just scraped Google. Then Google launched a json based image search API, so the project moved to that. Then Google shut that API down. The project moved to Getty Images. Then Getty shut their public API down too. Now it runs on Unsplash, until they get bored of having an API as well.

The idea is pretty simple. Enter a word in the form below and the page will fetch the top 9 images. It averages the color for each of them and then keeps the hue (to avoid everything turning gray or brown). Voila, the color associated with that word according to the internet.

It is well known that *things* from undesirable universes are always seeking an entrance into this one, which is the psychic equivalent of handy for the buses and closer to the shops. -- Terry Pratchett, "The Light Fantastic"
