Mr Carr has argued that the agency's power to block mergers on public-interest grounds covers matters as tenuous as a firm's diversity policies. He has launched a probe into Comcast's diversity policies after Mr Trump criticised NBC News and MSNBC for their "one-sided and vicious" output. Mr Carr has been known to wear a gold lapel pin shaped like the president's profile.
Mr Trump has told him to punish CBS and argued that the network should lose its broadcast licence. Mr Carr has said he would not be influenced by the president's lawsuit against Paramount, but his agency has slow-walked its review of Paramount's merger with Skydance Media, led by David Ellison.
After the assassination of Charlie Kirk in 2025, a comedian on ABC erroneously suggested Mr Kirk had been killed by a MAGA fan. Mr Carr threatened consequences, and within hours ABC took the comedian off the air. He then said all broadcasters should ease up on the "progressive foie gras".
