Hassan Rouhani is a former president of Iran who challenged both the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and supreme leader Ali Khamenei. He commanded a larger popular base than Masoud Pezeshkian, the incumbent. As of early 2026 he was said to be under house arrest; his allies were subject to travel bans. He is one of several political figures neutralised by the Islamic Republic: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Mohammad Khatami and Rouhani were barred from future office; Ali Rafsanjani was eliminated; Mir Hossein Moussavi and Mehdi Karroubi were imprisoned.
