Keiko Fujimori is a conservative Peruvian politician and the daughter of Alberto Fujimori, the late right-wing strongman who governed Peru in the 1990s. She has narrowly lost three presidential run-offs.
In the April 2026 general election Ms Fujimori won enough votes to secure a place in the run-off. Her supporters want a tough leader to tackle crime. She will face either Roberto Sánchez, a leftist, or Rafael López Aliaga, an ultraconservative, once the final count is completed.
The dirty work at political conventions is almost always done in the grim hours between midnight and dawn. Hangmen and politicians work best when the human spirit is at its lowest ebb.
