South Korean popular music genre that has become a global phenomenon. The term increasingly describes a musical style rather than a country of origin or language.
K-pop is ebullient, with catchy hooks and polished production. Melodies and transitions are written to be danced to. Songs often shift from ballad to rap or from pop to electronica. Groups tend to have many members, and songs are structured so that each gets a moment in the spotlight—useful because fans often follow a single member. K-pop fans are overwhelmingly female.
K-pop labels run intensive training programmes. Hopefuls can spend six to ten hours a day, for years, preparing for their debut. They are starting at ever younger ages—some have made their stage debuts at 13—which some industry observers find concerning. Trainees are judged not just on voice or dancing but also on discipline, teamwork and public presentation. "Idol" culture and the intense devotion performers inspire in fans is a crucial aspect of the genre; students are taught the art of the selfie and how to connect with admirers.
Some groups buck the label-assigned model. Stray Kids, an eight-member boyband at JYP Entertainment, write most of their music themselves through a subgroup called 3RACHA. Formed in 2017, Stray Kids eschewed the effervescent tunes preferred by rivals in favour of a rowdier, trap-pop style. Their leader, Bang Chan, selected each member himself from trainees—unusual in an industry where executives assemble groups. The approach has paid off: "DO IT" (2025) became their eighth album or EP to reach number one on the Billboard 200, a feat not even BTS have accomplished. Their "dominATE" stadium tour brought in revenues of almost $200m. Around 75% of their fanbase is female, according to Chartmetric, a music-data firm, and a large majority is aged 13-24.
Labels are increasingly recruiting talent from outside South Korea and promoting singing in English. HYBE, the label behind BTS, runs training programmes in Los Angeles and Mumbai. Its founder, Bang Si-hyuk, has said the company wants to "get the K out of K-pop". SM Entertainment opened SM Universe, a training academy in Singapore, its first facility in South-East Asia, attracting students from France, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Katseye, a girl group formed in 2023 under HYBE x Geffen Records (a joint venture with Universal Music Group), includes American, Indian, Filipina and Swiss members; only one of its six members is Korean. The group was formed during a televised talent show that let fans vote on the final line-up. Artists also collaborate with American stars: Blackpink, a girl group, has worked with Cardi B, Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez.
